Class of 2026 Graduate Spotlight: Lauren Forney
Debt‑Free, Purpose‑Driven, and Bound for Medicine: Lauren Forney Redefines Academic Excellence
Lauren Forney, C’2026, is redefining what academic excellence looks like. A standout Health Science major, Forney will graduate debt-free after earning more than $260,000 in external scholarships — and has already secured funding for post-baccalaureate studies. With her sights set on becoming a physician specializing in women’s health, Forney is driven by a commitment to healthcare equity, access and innovation.
“At Spelman, I learned that leadership is not defined by titles but by consistency, presence, and care for others. I have had the privilege of serving as a SpelBOUND big sister for three years, and a first-year study guide in the Student Success Office for the past two years,” said Forney. “In each of these roles, I often saw reflections of my own journey in the students I supported. Helping students adjust to college life, build confidence, and develop academic strategies reminded me of the importance of simply showing up for people in meaningful ways.”
EXPERIENCES ABROAD AND BEYOND
The Texas native has developed a strong portfolio of success through a wide range of international and
locally based experiences. She studied abroad in Chile, Italy and Abu Dhabi. These experiences further broadened her understanding and shaped how she approaches healthcare and leadership from a global perspective. Within the Atlanta University Center (AUC) community, she has demonstrated impactful leadership and service through a wide range of roles. She served as an orientation leader for the Classes of 2027 and 2028 and volunteered with organizations including Collegiate 100, the Atlanta Community Food Bank, the Peach Crest After‑School Program, and the Salvation Army.
Her professional experiences include internships with Mobilize Green; Pre‑College University, Inc.; Mentorship for Environmental Scientists; the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Laboratory at Oak Ridge; and the Morehouse School of Medicine’s Cancer Research Immersion Program, where she earned second place at the program’s cancer symposium. She also served as co‑director of Spelman Protégé.
YOUTHFUL AMBITION
She is deeply committed to addressing disparities in underserved communities and improving how healthcare systems serve women across different backgrounds and lived experiences. Through her experiences abroad, she explored cancer disparities, healthcare access and public health innovation. She also founded Lauren’s Community Service Academy at age 12, a non-profit which has grown for more than a decade and has provided over 32,000 canned goods to families in need and over 1,000 warm scarves for a senior living community.
Forney, a Health Career Opportunities Pipeline Preparation Program Scholar, credits the program for immensely preparing her for the post-baccalaureate pre-medical bridge program at Agnes Scott College, which she will begin on May 26, as she continues preparing for medical school.
“ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ has opened countless doors of opportunity and growth for me. I am deeply humbled and forever grateful for the gift of Spelman, and I carry a lasting sense of indebtedness for all it has given me, and I’m determined to give back,” said Forney. “I share this in hopes that others that read my story can see what is truly possible at ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½. We have been prepared to change the world.”
