Confidentiality
Maintaining Your Trust
The Counseling Center is committed to maintaining your confidentiality and adhering to HIPAA regulations. This means we will not talk to anyone outside the Counseling Center, including parents and faculty, without your written permission. However, there are exceptions to confidentiality to be aware of before beginning counseling. If there is a need to breach confidentiality, Counseling Center staff will make every effort to work collaboratively with you while adhering to ethical and legal mandates.
Some reasons where clinicians are legally required to disclose information include:
- An imminent threat of harm to self or others
- Suspected abuse of children, the elderly or the disabled
- A student's written authorization to release information
- Our counseling staff adheres to the ethical principles and codes of conduct as defined by the appropriate state licensure boards.
