Meet Our HCOPPP Scholars

The HCOPPP Scholars program at Spelman is a three-year, para-curricular program that provides a structured opportunity for pre-health students to enhance their exposure to health and health-related professions. The program aims to improve health literacy and prepare students for a successful career in the health field.

At the heart of HCOPPP is a community of passionate student scholars committed to making a difference in health care. Whether conducting groundbreaking research, studying abroad to explore global health issues, volunteering in local communities, or leading campus initiatives, HCOPPP scholars are preparing to be the change agents the world needs. The program not only equips them with academic and clinical skills but also fosters leadership, cultural competency, and a lifelong dedication to advancing health equity. Every scholar brings unique talents, experiences, and aspirations — together, they represent the future of compassionate and innovative healthcare.

Global Health Opportunities

Through HCOPPP, scholars expand their education beyond the classroom by participating in immersive global health experiences around the world. Students have traveled to countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, South Africa, and others to explore healthcare delivery systems, public health challenges, and cultural influences on medicine. These study abroad and service-learning experiences expose scholars to diverse healthcare environments, broaden their global perspectives, and deepen their commitment to advancing health equity. Whether conducting research, participating in clinical shadowing, or engaging in community health initiatives abroad, HCOPPP scholars gain invaluable insights that prepare them to lead with cultural competence and global awareness in their future healthcare careers.

Health Careers

The Health Career Opportunities Pipeline Preparation Program (HCOPPP) was developed by Dr. Rosalind Gregory-Bass in the fall of 2008. The purpose of the program is to prepare pre-health students with the skills necessary to become capable and knowledgeable health care professionals. The H.C.O.P.P.P. program provides mentorship, professional, personal and academic development opportunities for aspiring physicians, dentists, pharmacists, public health specialists, nurses, and other medical professionals. Students are eligible to apply to become HCOPPP scholars in the fall of their sophomore year.
